Coachman Hans Martin Kristiansen founded the company in 1873 at the age of 28 under the name H.M. Kristiansens Vognmannsforretning. He provided the residents of Christiania with luxurious horse-drawn transportation, operating with 14 horses and five carriages from his stables in Akersgaten. As automobiles gradually took over city streets, a small piece of romantic history faded, and the horses were eventually phased out.
By the time Hans Martin Kristiansen Jr. passed away in 1936, the business had six buses and four seven-seaters, in addition to six horses and 12 wedding carriages. That same year, the company became a limited liability company and was renamed H.M. Kristiansens Automobilbyrå AS.
In 1979, the current owners acquired the company from the managing director at the time. Previously, the brothers had operated a bus route in Årnes, their childhood hometown, before moving to Oslo to focus on coach services. When they took over the company, the fleet consisted of three buses, two limousines, and two funeral cars.
Today, HMK is one of Norway’s leading coach companies and the oldest in Europe still in operation. The company has grown into a corporate group with ownership in its subsidiaries Bislet Limousine, HMK Eiendom, and Norske Turistbusser. The business currently employs around 80 full-time staff.
The fleet consists of 30 low-emission buses, 5 minibuses, and 20 executive vehicles. The company’s offices, bus parking facilities, and its own repair workshop are all located on a property in Rommen, Oslo.
